Courage Knows No Borders: Araminta on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for María Corina Machado

10 October 2025 |

– STATEMENT –

Araminta commends the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s 2025 Peace Prize decision to honour María Corina Machado, whose bravery embodies the struggle for democracy and human rights in Venezuela and beyond. Her recognition reminds the world that defenders, whether standing their ground at home or continuing their mission in exile, form one united movement for justice, dignity, and freedom.

Announcing the award, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, praised Machado’s decision to remain in her country despite serious threats to her life, noting that her courage had “inspired millions.” In the past year, she has been forced to live in hiding, reminding us of the high personal cost that defenders often pay for their commitment to freedom and justice.

At the same time, Araminta recognises that countless other human rights defenders face similar threats and are forced to leave their countries in order to survive. Exile is rarely a choice; it is often the only path to safety. Yet even in exile, defenders continue their work — documenting violations, mobilising communities, and advocating for change across borders. Their struggle is a vital part of the same global movement that the Nobel Committee honours today.

This year’s Peace Prize highlights both courage and continuity: the courage to stand firm in the face of danger, and the continuity of human rights work beyond borders. Araminta reaffirms its commitment to supporting those who, whether at home or in exile, keep defending human dignity and democratic values in the most challenging circumstances.
