A turning point for academic freedom and human rights?

Araminta will participate in the conference Contemporary Threats to Academic Freedom and Democracy: Education, Journalism, and Human Rights, hosted by Bard College Berlin in partnership with Humboldt University of Berlin on May 13–14.

The conference brings together legal experts, academics, and practitioners to examine how increasing restrictions on civic space are affecting academic freedom, independent journalism, and the protection of human rights.

On May 13, Araminta’s Jennifer Gaspar will speak on a panel addressing a proposed directive with significant implications for human rights defenders. The discussion will focus on the directive’s urgency, its legal and practical consequences, and its potential impact on the ability of civil society actors to operate effectively. The panel will also include UN Special Rapporteurs and Kenneth Roth.

This conversation comes at a moment when regulatory and political pressures are converging in ways that risk limiting rights-based work across jurisdictions.
